Ensuring Opportunities for Success for Every Student

Our Values
Student-centered/Students First
Passionate
Persevering
Authentic
Knowledgeable

Kathleen Moberg
President, 2018-2019

Dear Colleagues,

It is an honor to lead the Association in what I consider the most dynamic and transformational time in my almost thirty years in the California community college system. Now, more than ever, we Student Services professionals need to hold fast to our core values:

  • Student Centered/Students First
  • Passionate
  • Persevering
  • Authentic
  • Knowledgeable

As we navigate new and changing initiatives, we will also need to “reach across the aisle,” building new and strengthening existing collaborative relationships with our Instructional and Business colleagues to ensure that student voices and student needs are being heard across the institutions we serve.  I have no doubt that Student Success is our shared vision and goal, and I hope we will forge new ways of communicating and working together to improve the lives of our students.

One of my favorite work-related authors is Harvard professor Clayton Christensen, who has written many books on disruption, innovation, and managing change.  Interestingly, he has also published a book How Will You Measure Your Life, which addresses purpose and legacy.  As many of us near retirement, and will be passing the baton to our able and eager younger colleagues, how do we embrace and model transformation and innovation in our work?  More importantly, how do we measure the impact of our professional relationships and lives, and how do we demonstrate our commitment to our students and their right to student-focused services and Instructional programs?  Are we collaborative and open in our conversations with our colleagues?  Are we mentoring and creating pathways for those who will follow?  I look forward to exploring possibilities with my accomplished colleagues as we respond to new challenges and directives.

More than ever, we will need your participation on committees, task groups, and advisories to represent the Student Services and Equity perspectives that we share. The important work we do requires our expertise well outside the boundaries of our colleges.  We infuse the dialogue with our passion for serving the underserved, and with our expertise in creating bridges and supportive systems.
I hope you will Save the Date and join us March 25 and 26th, 2019 at the annual conference at the Sheraton Gateway LAX.

Warmly,
